BLACK HOLE

I recently was going through my stuff from high school. Since I am stuck at home, I have had plenty of time to waste by just staring at my old notebooks, drawings, diaries, and lots of pointless pieces of paper that I should have thrown away a long time ago. One of the things that caught my eye was an essay I wrote on the back of my English notebook while I was still in high school. The title of the essay was “Black Holes.” It didn’t have scientific content as you might expect, because it was not a science project. It was merely an essay for the English midterm project. It was a product of a high school student’s obsession and curiosity. But I learned a lot from it while reading it again last time.

So I rewrote it again, in another perspective. Bear with me till the end…

Have you ever heard of the term “black hole”?

A black hole is a massive substance that is found in outer space. Astronomers say that a black hole originates from a dying star. When a star shines, it does not mean it will shine forever, that it will stay pretty till the end. Why? There is a substance that makes the star shine. This substance will start to fall off some day, and this will cause the star to stop shining. When this happens, the star will start getting dense. And soon it will become dense enough to form a black hole. Being a black hole, they absorb and swallow everything that is found around them. They feed on space junk and asteroids, and they grow to be a super black hole. After they grow up to be a super black hole, they will even feed on baby black holes.

Sometimes I feel like people and black holes have a lot in common. Just like the black holes, people who are depressed, suicidal, and those who have given up on their life were once happy or had a smile on their faces. Just like when the black hole used to be a star that had a substance to make it shine, people also have a reason to smile and be happy. If there no longer exists any reason to make that person smile, that person will turn out to be just like the black hole. Hearts will be filled with pain, hate, and despair; smiles will be replaced by tears and sorrow.

What I am trying to say is, let your reason for happiness be unconditional. Of course, people can be a reason for your smile; they can make you happy. You can be satisfied because of your work and all. But those are not going to last till the end. Beauty fades, people will change, and even the sun sets and the stars die. There is nothing in this world that won’t change, because our world by itself is in a constant evolution.

Do not live like the stars; you might end up being like the black holes. Instead, live like the moon. The moon does not shine. It emits the light that it absorbed from the sun. And because the sun never stops giving light, the moon will also never stop glowing and emitting the light that it got from the sun.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, Rejoice!" Philippians 4:4

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." Hebrews 13:8

If your reason for happiness is Jesus Christ, then it is unconditional. Either in the valley or on the mountain, either on the verge of losing it all or on top of having everything you want, you will always be joyful. Because Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever regardless of our everyday status.

THE END.
